Israeli army tanks hold a position near the Gaza Strip border on July 22, 2014.
Israeli army tanks hold a position near the Gaza Strip border on July 22, 2014.

The US government has played a major role in Israel’s offensive against the Gaza Strip as it gave political space for the conflict to continue by not intervening directly, a political analyst says.

In an article for the Press TV Website, Shamus Cooke blamed the administration of President Barack Obama of assisting the Tel Aviv regime’s war crimes by shielding Israel from global political pressure and hiding its war crimes by misrepresenting the conflict.

“Obama further assisted in Israeli war crimes by repeatedly justifying Israel’s right to commit them, deceitfully placing all Israel’s actions under the big umbrella of ‘self-defense,’” the analyst wrote.

Israel announced the ground invasion of the besieged enclave only ten days after the beginning of the brutal airstrikes. The move made US President Barack Obama make the awaited statement, in which he asked Israeli authorities to minimize civilian deaths and noting that US supported Israel’s “right to defense.”

“A statement like this can be interpreted to mean only one thing: a green light to continue the massacre,” Cooke also pointed out.

Meanwhile, Washington used its influence over the UN Security Council to limit its statement to “serious concern” about civilian casualties on both sides of the conflict, the analyst pointed out.

Over the past 15 days, Israeli warplanes have been hitting numerous sites in the Gaza Strip, demolishing homes and burying families in the rubble. Israeli tanks also began a ground offensive against the impoverished Palestinian land on July 17.

More than 600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the Tel Aviv’s offensive.

Palestinian resistance fighters have also retaliated against the deadly Israeli attacks by firing a barrage of rockets deep into the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. They have also killed some 30 Israelis in their retaliatory operations.

A video has emerged showing Israeli soldiers using sniper fire to kill a Palestinian civilian in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The video footage, released by the International Solidarity Movement, shows an injured Palestinian civilian being shot dead by Israeli soldiers’ sniper fire.

The incident occurred in Gaza’s Shujaiya neighborhood.

According to activists, the victim was trying to reach his family in the neighborhood when Israeli snipers shot him and then continued to fire as he was on the ground.

The activists also described seeing two ambulances which have been targeted and destroyed by Israeli forces.

Israeli tanks and warplanes continue to pound the besieged enclave with sources saying that over 100 Palestinians were killed on Monday alone.

The latest casualties bring the Palestinian death toll to nearly 600 from 15 days of Israeli attacks. Over 3,000 Palestinians have also been injured in the onslaught.

Medical workers are now raising alarm over a humanitarian crisis in Gaza where hospitals are running low on basic medical supplies.

The UN Security Council has expressed serious concern over the growing number of casualties in the Gaza Strip.

Gaza has been blockaded since June 2007. The blockade has caused a decline in the standards of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty
