The US government has played a major role in Israel’s offensive against the Gaza Strip as it gave political space for the conflict to continue by not intervening directly, a political analyst says.
In an article for the Press TV Website, Shamus Cooke blamed the administration of President Barack Obama of assisting the Tel Aviv regime’s war crimes by shielding Israel from global political pressure and hiding its war crimes by misrepresenting the conflict.
“Obama further assisted in Israeli war crimes by repeatedly justifying Israel’s right to commit them, deceitfully placing all Israel’s actions under the big umbrella of ‘self-defense,’” the analyst wrote.
Israel announced the ground invasion of the besieged enclave only ten days after the beginning of the brutal airstrikes. The move made US President Barack Obama make the awaited statement, in which he asked Israeli authorities to minimize civilian deaths and noting that US supported Israel’s “right to defense.”
“A statement like this can be interpreted to mean only one thing: a green light to continue the massacre,” Cooke also pointed out.
Meanwhile, Washington used its influence over the UN Security Council to limit its statement to “serious concern” about civilian casualties on both sides of the conflict, the analyst pointed out.
Over the past 15 days, Israeli warplanes have been hitting numerous sites in the Gaza Strip, demolishing homes and burying families in the rubble. Israeli tanks also began a ground offensive against the impoverished Palestinian land on July 17.
More than 600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the Tel Aviv’s offensive.
Palestinian resistance fighters have also retaliated against the deadly Israeli attacks by firing a barrage of rockets deep into the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. They have also killed some 30 Israelis in their retaliatory operations.
